You know all about the best new places to eat in NYC, but you don't know all about the best new places to drink in NYC. Or at least you didn't until you read this: a list of the 12 best new places to booze immediately after you've finished making spreadsheets for the day (or whatever people do at regular jobs that don’t let you drink at your desk).
NoMad
The NoMad has finally expanded its award-winning bar into a MUCH larger, bi-level, low-lit tavern with fireplaces and lots of leather. The deep cocktail list spans from classics like the Huntsman (vodka, Jamaican rum, lemon, Angostura bitters), to "Cocktail Explosions" big enough for 6-8 people. This is an article about drinking, so we’re not gonna make toobig a deal about this, but they also have one of the best new burgers.
Chelsea
It finally opened in Manhattan, so get over there for old-school video games mixed with a top-level beer bar that will make it hard to remember if "Middle Ages Dragonslayer" and "Upright Six" are beers, or video games. Hint: they’re beers.
Soho
Named for an 1800s New Orleans bartender, this drinking den underneath Chalk Point Kitchen is throwing down the classic cocktail lounge & piano bar vibe with tufted leather banquettes, ornate chars, bookshelves, and classic-ish cocktails. These include the Pueblo Old Fashioned with reposado, smoked jalapeño syrup, Patron cordial, and tamarind puree, and The Drugstore Cowboy with Rémy Martin, Disaronno, pineapple juice, homemade grenadine, Kona syrup, and sparkling water.
Chelsea
This outdoor terrace bar at The High Line Hotel is where you go when you have an afternoon with nothing to do but drink outside. They mostly have Champagne (with about one dozen on hand), but beer and wine are there if you want ‘em, and eating includes oysters, burgers, and grilled swordfish.
Lower East Side
In advance of its upcoming project, Dirty French (a French bistro in the Ludlow Hotel), the guys behind Torrisi, Carbone, and ZZ’s Clam Bar have opened a companion bar in the hotel. It's got a chilled-out, comfortable, a-little-too-glamourous-to-be-rustic vibe, and top-notch inventive cocktails like the Grand Prix with Japanese whisky, coconut vermouth, ras el hanout (a North African spice mix) & bitters, and the Muddy Water with cumin rye, Irish whiskey, cinnamon, bitters & absinthe.
Gramercy
This cocktail parlor comes from the team behind one of NYC’s essential speakeasies (Raines Law Room), and great-spot-for-British-fare The Peacock. The interior is inspired by Midnight in Paris, with three rooms each with a different time period vibe, and all with the perfect ambiance for putting back bomb drinks like the Whiskey Business with rye, ancho chile liqueur, cinnamon, lemon, and angostura
Midtown East
This luxe cocktail joint from Charlie Palmer in the Lipstick Building is specializing in a badass selection of rye, small-batch bourbons, and top-notch mixed drinks, like the New York Julep with bourbon, 151 rum, and fresh basil, or the Man About Town with rye, Cocchi Rouge, Aperol, Campari, and flaming orange zest.
Lower East Side
This beer bar from the team that involves a couple of the best beer bars in the city (including Alewife in Queens and The Jeffrey on the UES) is pouring one of the most impressive beer selections you'll find. It's got 30 taps, filling your glass with the likes ofSinglecut Billy Full Stack, Stillwater Cellar Door, and Ninkasi NWA.
Tribeca
It’s a floating oyster and cocktail bar on an old schooner (which we already schooled you on). The cocktails skew classics like the Negroni Sbagliato, but it also has a new rotating one each day, so you don’t get bored spending every damn day here this Summer.
Garment District
This rooftop bar on the 22nd story of the Archer Hotel offers you incredibly close views of the Empire State Building, indoor and outdoor space, and cocktails like the Empire State with gin, St. Germain, ginger, and basil, or the First Crush with Cognac, green Chartreuse, Campari, sweet vermouth, and not Carmen Electra
Murray Hill
Aside from some very impressive views, this new bar also throws down some very impressive drink-making on a 36ft-long reclaimed-wood bar top. Said drinks include the Wurzgarten with poblano-flavored mezcal, lime, ginger, and Schlenkerla Helles Lager (a smokey beer), and the Baby in a Corner (10yr Scotch, St. Germain, and Zwack 20)
West Village
Revamping the former Chez Sardine into this latest effort from the Little Wisco team (which includes one of our favorite brunch spots, Perla, Montmartre, and Joseph Leonard), Bar Sardine is doing up bar snacks like Gruyere grilled cheese, and an excellent burger with interestingly named pair-able cocktails. These include the Dance Up That Alley loaded with two types of gin, coconut water & a “cucumber surfboard”, a soft-serve Black Pepper Grasshopper with Kringle, Tempus Cacao, Wondermint, almond milk & black pepper, or the barrel-aged Campfire Boulevard with Campari, bourbon & sweet vermouth.
